Oncology Clinical Trials Glossary
This glossary brings together, in plain language, the terms you'll most often come across while exploring oncology clinical trials on Aurora.
Phase 1 Clinical Trial
The first stage in which a new treatment is tested in humans, usually with a small group of participants. Its main goal is to assess the treatment's safety and identify the right dose, not yet its effectiveness.
Who takes part in this phase?
Usually patients whose standard treatment options have already been exhausted, closely monitored by the research team given the smaller amount of safety data available at this stage.
Eligibility Criteria
The conditions that define who can (inclusion criteria) or cannot (exclusion criteria) take part in a specific clinical trial — for example, tumor type and stage, prior treatments, or overall health status.
Informed Consent
The document and process through which a patient receives all information about the study — objectives, procedures, risks and benefits — before freely and knowingly deciding whether to take part.
